This past Sunday, ALL Americans: young and old; male and female; dog and cat, gathered around the "boob tube" to embrace and relish in an annual, national tradition. Even in the most conservative of households the chili was spicy and the beer was cold. No matter whose team was in or out; or what team would win or lose...we all gathered together...as a country...ritually united.
It was Super Bowl Sunday!!!
"God, I love football", (sorry to interject)!!
As previous years before, I spent this year's Super Bowl Sunday at a house party. As always, there was food, and beer, and great conversation; but this year something was distinctively different.
My very best friend Laura and her boyfriend, Steve generously hosted the soiree. The total guest count peaked around 15...just a small gathering. We all exchanged witty banter and entertained each others stories while we stuffed our faces with Frito's and chocolate chip cookies (damn those cookies were good)! Behaving just like the rest of the world.
But; at some point in the evening (as we all gawked at the TV), I remember looking around and realizing that every person in the room was part of my new tradition. For the first time (in a long time) I felt at home.
I'm not gonna bore you with who was there and who wasn't. And it's not important to mention that the E-Trade baby stole the advertising campaign, or that the "Boss" slid and crotch-thrusted the camera, or that Larry Fitzgerald shined on the field, or that the Steelers brought home their 6th Lombardi trophy (YAY to Laura)...but, what IS important is that I found my family.
And so the story goes...groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow the following day - meaning 6 more weeks of winter; and yes, the country is in a recession; and yes, many of us are unemployed...and; yes, we are scared. But, we must not lose our hope and our trust.
Let Super Bowl Sunday be a reminder of what you have...of what we all have...
We are family; and within each other, faith will persevere...
A new beginning
